Port Glasgow

... welcomes you to the home of the Comet, Scotland.

The name of the town of Port Glasgow originates from the time when it was the port for Glasgow, which was before the River Clyde was dredged and deepened. For hundreds of years the primary industries in Port Glasgow have been ship building and also sugar refining. Today, the town is home to one of the few Clyde shipyards that are still operational.

The Comet was a paddle-steamer launched in Port Glasgow in 1812. Built by Henry Bell, it became the first sea-going steamship to operate commercially in Europe. The steamer carried passengers and freight between Greenock, Helensburgh and Glasgow. Port Glasgow is now home to a replica of the paddle-steamer.

Sections of Historic Scotland's Newark Castle in Port Glasgow date back to the 1400s. The Castle currently boasts a collection of historic prints of the town.
