Drumpellier

At
the turn of the last century, Coatbridge was the eight largest
town in Scotland. It was formed
by the amalgamation of a number of local villages. Coatbridge's prominence
earlier this century was due to the iron industry in the town. Today
Coatbridge boasts a number of attractions, including "Scotland's
noisiest museum!".

Coatbridge,
like Airdrie, is in the Monklands district of the Clyde
Valley. "Monklands" is derived from when King Malcom IV presented
the Cistercian Monks of Newbattle with land in 1162. Weaving became
the main occupation in the 18th Century, before which the Monklands
district was largely used for farming. The coal and iron industries
grew in the late 1800s resulting in the population increasing. |
