Traditions and Festivities! (Continued...)
Biggar's Summer Celebrations and the Riding the Marches fall in
the same week. Riding the Marches is a tradition respected in
most towns in the Scottish Borders. Riding the Marches is when
the boundaries of the historic burgh are patrolled on horseback
by the Cornet (a young local man) and a number of other riders.
The Glove Race is an older tradition than the Riding the Marches.
It is an annual athletic challenge for Biggar's youth. The Glove
Race began in 1451 when the Flemings presented a prize of "a
pair of white gloves".
Vintage Car Rally
by Biggar Museums
Trust, the Annual Vintage Car Rally is held each August in
Biggar in commemoration of the work of Albion
Motors, the successful truck company that was founded by a
Biggar farmer. Each year, dozens of vehicles from all over Britain
arrive in the Burgh to participate in this celebration of the
invention of the motorcar.

From The Air

photographer Colin Baxter. They explore the length and breadth
of this rich and diverse land across the intricate jigsaw
of cities, towns and villages; farms, fields and forests;
and over bens, glens and lochs - an eagle's view of Scotland
as never seen before.[col. illus. hardback]
