Historic Biggar, Historic Buildings. |
Biggar
Kirk, the parish church, dates back to 1545. It has just celebrated
its 450th anniversary. It is the last pre-reformation church in
Scotland. Biggar Kirk is a beautifully constructed building, the
floor plan is in the shape of a Christian Cross and the restored
stone walls and outstanding stained glass windows make it worth
visiting.
The
Church was built by the Flemings of Boghall Castle. Mary Fleming
of Boghall was one of Mary Queen of Scots Four Marys. Each
summer the crowning of a Fleming Queen takes place in Biggar
on it's annual Gala Day.
Biggar
is full of historic buildings - many of the fine buildings on
it's High Street are listed buildings.
