Sutherland, Sir Thomas
Sir Thomas Sutherland was born in Aberdeen in 1834.
He became Chairman of the Penisular and Oriental Shipping Company (better
known today as P&O) in 1881, a post which he held for thirty-three
years until 1914. He died in 1922, at which time he was senior Vice-President
of the Suez Canal Company.
Sir Thomas Sutherland is regarded as having been one
of those who advanced the British shipping empire during his time.
