15th March 1851: Nitshill Disaster
61 miners died on the 15th March in 1851 after an explosion
at Nitshill Colliery in Glasgow. The explosion trapped the miners one
thousand feet below ground. Forty-five hours after the explosion two men,
badly burned, were brought out alive as the result of rescue attempts.
The Nitshill disaster was Scotland's first major colliery disaster.
