A new style uniform which is more suited to the demands of modern
policing and heralds the first major change in the police uniform
in more than two hundred years, was launched by Strathclyde
Police on Tuesday 26
February 2002.
The new-look police attire – which includes an open-necked blue
shirt and black cargo trousers – has been designed to meet the officers’
needs and to contribute to the effectiveness of the police uniform.
A similar style of police uniform has been in place since the UK’s
oldest force (City of Glasgow Police) was formed in 1800, and Strathclyde
will be the first force in Scotland
to move away from that trend, starting with the exclusion of the
black tie.
