Bubonic Plague
Regular outbreaks of the bubonic plague occured in Glasgow
in the past - until later in the 17th Century. Perhaps the worst epidemic
of the disease is that recorded between 1646 and 1648 which was so severe
that the City Gates were closed and even the University of Glasgow relocated
to Ayrshire. That was not the last of the bubonic plague though - it returned
several times, including as late as 1900 when it caused sixteen deaths
in Glasgow.
