Black, Professor Sir James (C H)
Professor Sir James Black C H, born in 1924, was educated
at Beath High School in Cowdenbeath. He went on to study at the University
of St Andrews.
The Scottish professor discovered the chemical potential
of receptor blocking drugs. He pioneered the beta receptor blocker drug
propranolol which helps to fight coronary heart disease and hypertension.
In 1988 Professor Sir James Black was awarded the Nobel
Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
